I have had several opportunities to travel within the past few years at my current position, and I have to say I love them! A lot of people don’t like doing CLEs (Continuing Legal Education classes for you non-lawyers), but I love them. Probably because I am a geek and would go back to school in a heartbeat.
Last week I was able to go to Tampa Florida for a conference, and stayed two extra days to explore the town. My time in Tampa was… interesting.
For the conference we stayed at a very nice, very expensive hotel which had no hot water to speak of. Seriously, the majority of the conference attendees took ice cold showers for several days. It was weird. The hotel offered me a free beverage from their bar or coffee shop, and they ended up comping a night of roomservice. However, the food was phenomenol and the beds were so incredible.
The first night I ordered room service and headed straight to bed!
After the conference ended I went for a run to the closest beach. Tampa is not known for its beaches, but I found a little one about two miles from the hotel. (Funny story– I ask the concierge if that would a good place to run, and he looked at me like I was crazy and said “That is really far away!” When I told him I wanted to run 4-5 miles, he really thought I was crazy!) The run there was interesting because it was all commercial, but once I got to the beach, it was perfect!
The next day, my sister drove up from Fort Myers Beach to spend the day with me! We grabbed a yummy breakfast and then headed straight for Clearwater, Florida which is just outside Tampa and had the most amazing beaches. Even though it was chilly, it was a great time AND we saw dolphins!
I had to buy a cute new Vera for myself!
Next we went back to Tampa for lunch in the SoHo neighborhood. It was a super cute little area, with shops and restaurants. After scarfing down on yummy fish tacos, we headed to Nordstrom Rack for a little retail therapy. Oh man I miss have a Nordstroms near me!
Next, we headed down to the University of Tampa and quickly realized it was an amazing campus! It is set right in downtown with buildings so old they look like a movie set!
After our fun filled day came to a close, I checked into my new hotel. It turns out that this one too had no hot showers. Is this a Tampa thing?? The next morning I woke up early for my flight home, took a very quick splash/cold shower.
All in all, Tampa was interesting. I do not think I would visit again if I were looking for a place to vacation.
Have you ever been to Tampa? What did you think?
